Galaxy gets BitLicense in New York, paving the way for the cryptocurrency's institutional growth in the US

21.05.2026
Galaxy Digital Holdings announced that it has received a BitLicense license from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), marking a significant step toward expanding the company's institutional presence in the U.S. cryptocurrency industry. The BitLicense is one of the strictest regulatory licenses in the world governing digital asset companies in New York State.
According to the NYDFS, only 33 organizations have received BitLicense to date, underscoring the high level of compliance and transparency requirements. Receiving the license allows Galaxy to offer a wide range of cryptocurrency services to institutional clients, including custody, trading and asset management, while meeting strict security and compliance standards.
Galaxy CEO Mike Novogratz said that obtaining the BitLicense builds trust between traditional financial institutions and the crypto industry, and further integrates digital assets into the global financial system. Institutional investment in cryptocurrencies in the US grew 27% in 2025, reflecting the growing interest of major players in digital assets.
Experts believe Galaxy's move could incentivize other companies to obtain BitLicense and accelerate the development of infrastructure for institutional investors in the US. Increased regulation combined with innovation is shaping a new era for cryptocurrency markets, where security and transparency are becoming key values.
